New challenges of tourism in heritage contexts
Following the success of the 1st ATLAS Latin America Conference 2017 organized by the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil, the second edition of the conference is launched, whose theme is: "New Challenges of Tourism in Heritage Contexts". Heritage tourism is a broad phenomenon, referring both to cultural and natural heritage and within cultural heritage including both its tangible and intangible expressions, with Latin America being a worldwide reference in all these aspects. Heritage tourism is a priority segment in our countries in terms of number of visitors, as well as income and job creation. In addition, it plays a fundamental role in the conservation and restoration of the heritage assets of the region. Within this framework, conservation of built heritage has got a strategic importance. However, heritage tourism also presents important challenges in its management as the ones derived from mass tourism, heritage degradation, congestion, pollution, gentrification in historical centres, negative impacts on the urban landscape, conflicts concerning authenticity and disrespect to indigenous communities, to mention some of the most recurrent. This conference seeks to become a forum for reflection on these and other challenges derived from tourism in heritage contexts.
