The Institut Català de Recerca en Patrimoni Cultural (ICRPC) was created in November 2006 by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Girona. It is a CERCA centre affiliated with the University of Girona; it performs its activities in Catalonia with an international projection.
The ICRPC's objectives and mission are essential for identifying the impacts that the institution may have on society as a whole, and also influence the design of its research's impact strategy.
The mission is defined in the Strategic Plan 2022-25:
"The ICRPC supports and implements actions related to basic research, transfer, education and socialisation of knowledge in cultural heritage, with the aim of providing society with tools for analysing the heritage received and its present and future social relations. It brings together researchers in different disciplines, both employed directly by it and on contract from different universities to address topics that connect heritage with social challenges, focusing on three basic lines: the study of heritagisation processes, the analysis of the social uses of heritage in contemporary society, and the processes and mechanisms for safeguarding and destroying cultural heritage from the past to the present. Position itself as a reference centre in the field of research in cultural heritage and contribute key tools for decision-making in public policies concerning heritage."
Throughout these sixteen years and with the aim of consolidating itself as a national and international benchmark in cultural heritage research, the ICRPC has expanded and redefined its lines of work. Research and knowledge transfer is currently carried out in 4 lines:
Heritagisation processes.
Uses of cultural heritage.
Safeguarding and destruction of cultural heritage.
Cultural heritage audiences in Catalonia.
Since 2014, the ICRPC has hosted the Observatori dels Públics del Patrimoni Cultural de Catalunya (OPPCC), a service that supports museums and heritage facilities, as well as public administrations and private agents that deal with heritage in Catalonia, in its relations with the public to contribute to improving planning and management.
