Description

The inventory describes more than three hundred architectural elements that had formed part of the lines of the old Girona railways. Therefore, it confirms that there is a large majority that has disappeared forever, in the different waves of intervention —regular or irregular— that have taken place on the old train tracks. However, the elements that have not been preserved correspond to the most modest works that, in the case of the railway, were serial pieces: if one has been preserved, we have the model, because all the others were similar. That said, we cannot ignore the fact that, among what we conserve, there are buildings in poor condition, that the Cellera station was demolished and that the bridges, pontoons, sewers, culverts and overhangs are engulfed by vegetation that has turned the old railway into a narrow strip. Too narrow to make it understandable. Perhaps, it could be argued that the elements that would be inventoried have, individually, little heritage value. It is true: the lines were built with great economy of means. There are no great works of art. However, the richness must be sought in the whole, in the interrelation of the human and material landscapes that have accompanied them from the precise moment in which they were imagined, taken advantage of and, over time, used again to pedal along them. This is what this Inventory wants to convey.
