Re-enactment events in Catalonia

General description

The dissemination and promotion of history and of cultural heritage are closely associated with local and regional development. Councils are currently encountering the need to generate new proposals in order to revitalise tourism and promote their towns. The main measures have been geared to exploring and emphasising local potential to create new appeal within tourist circuits. Against this background, emphasis on cultural heritage and initiatives to disseminate history have become very important.

This research considers educational, leisure and tourism activities based on the use of cultural heritage and analyses some events that have featured history re-enactment to promote the towns and cities of Catalonia and that in the last twenty years have become well-established and have experienced continuous growth.

Objectives

To produce a research- and analysis-based summary of specific data on the history re-enactment events currently being staged throughout Catalonia.

To identify the management and operational structure of these events.

To analyse the role of these events in the promotion of cultural heritage, in the diversification of tourism and in local development.

To provide an overview that may be of use to cultural managers, to disseminators of cultural heritage and to experts on tourism.

Methodology and work plan

Screening of history re-enactment events (fairs, markets and festivals) of those currently held in Catalonia.

Process of identifying organising institutions and entities.

Production of a questionnaire featuring the themes subject to analysis.

Sending of questionnaires to institutions throughout Catalonia that operate as the main organisers of fairs.

Screening of data obtained from the questionnaires.

Screening of information from the Internet, press and other information sources.
