Description

The interest of the Peretti Foundations in the Diplomatario de Sant Martí Vell project responds to the spirit of conservation, diffusion and knowledge of the historical and cultural world heritage of its founder, Mrs. Elsa Peretti, focused here in this small municipality in the Gironès region, a town closely linked to the life and work of the Italian designer.

The historical data known about the small town of Sant Martí Vell, in the Gironès, are extraordinarily scarce, although the medieval and modern documentation preserved in public and private archives reveals a great wealth of information about the place and its inhabitants. To try to amend and correct, in part, this historiographical void, since 2010, and with the impetus of the Elsa Peretti Foundation first and the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation, Delegación en Cataluña, then, the first documentary investigations are being carried out in the register books of the notaries that existed in the 16th century. Likewise, other funds, collections and documentary records are also examined that allow us to embrace aspects beyond the chronology cited, specifically from the 11th century to the 20th century.

The prospections have covered all the diversity of contracts typical of notarial documentation: cabreamientos, enfitéuticos establishments, purchases, wills, matrimonial capitulations, etc. The results of these first works have been fully encouraging: it has been possible to identify more than a thousand deeds granted by inhabitants of Sant Martí Vell or related to activities and businesses that took place; and it has been possible to complete the editing of approximately half of the documents. The intervention has made it possible to bring to light a whole repertoire of unpublished information on very diverse topics, referring to both private and family life as well as public and collective life.

Among these last data, it is worth noting those that report on the political functioning of the population, especially on the exercise of real jurisdiction and the organization of the municipal government, aspects that until now were totally unknown; and, among the news of an economic nature, those related to the production and trade of pastel in charge of the Gempere family. The main allodial lordships that held Sunday rights in the place have also been identified: the benefice of Santa María that Brunissenda de Gironella founded in the 13th century in the monastery of Sant Daniel in Girona and the small secular lordship of the Flaçà, a family based in the area of ??Ginestet.

Objectives

On the horizon is the objective of identifying relevant documentation to describe the history of Sant Martí Vell and establishing a basic body of documents to make an edition.

Methodology

The search for records is carried out in documental collections of various natures, both civil (notarial, patrimonial, real) and religious (monastic, episcopal, parish), both public and private. The edition of the writings is carried out in the form of irrigation and according to the criteria established by the International Diplomatic Commission for the edition of medieval documents (1984). The registers are accompanied by an index of people and other repertoires of places, institutions and document types.
